Brain Heist: Is Technology Using You?

Technology is an integral part of our 21st Century life. However, has its constant use left you feeling like it is invading your life—leaving you frustrated, stressed out, and even burned out?

Dr. Vicki Kloosterhouse shares some of the latest research on how the constant use of technology is rewiring our brain, influencing our behavior, and increasing our stress. The good news is that there are steps you can take to control technology use, rather than letting it control you!

Vicki Kloosterhouse

From the desert of Darfur to the bustling cities of Asia, Vicki has spoken internationally on topics of leadership, stress management, and women’s issues. She has conducted stress management training for relief workers in hot spots around the world, and also has taught in higher education in the United States, Asia, and Africa. Working with Empower Women Leaders, Vicki helped to design and implement The Women’s Bucket Brigade—a grassroots project that equipped Liberian women to train neighbors in Ebola prevention, which included the distribution of buckets and disinfectants.

Her interest in the effects of technology on individuals and society was peaked as she traveled the world noting that even in third world countries technology and social media were influencing cultures. Once back in the United States, Vicki began to study the use of the Internet and social media in relation to stress management and was concerned about what she found. As a regular user of technology, she is thankful for its availability and how it has provided her with the mechanism to interact with others around the world. However, she believes we need to become wise digital citizens who use technology to serve us positively rather than to enslave us.

Graduating from Michigan State University, Vicki earned her Ph.D. in Family and Child Ecology with an emphasis on psychosocial health. She has received additional training in stress management and in trauma care from the Harvard Medical School/New England Deaconess Hospital: Clinical Training in Mind/ Body Medicine, The Center for Mind/Body Medicine, The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children, and Certificates of Completion in Stress Coaching and Crisis Response and Trauma Care from Light University. She has her M.A. in Classroom Education.

Vicki is the author of a book that focuses on women, UN-DE-TERRED: Embracing Our Purpose and Facing Our Challenges. She is a co-founder of With Eyes Wide Open and is a John Maxwell coach, speaker, and trainer. Vicki currently serves on the Board of Equipping Leaders International, is a volunteer for Love, INC, and is an active member of Cornerstone EPC church in Brighton.

She and her husband, Jon, reside in Michigan near their wonderful grandchildren.
